Are you a detail oriented and focused individual with strong background in science or engineering? Our client a utility company is looking for Science Analyst for their Calgary office. The science analyst will provide an intermediate level of environmental analysis to electric and gas facility applications, based on provincial and federal environmental legislation and standards. This position primarily assists with facility-related applications dealing specifically with noise issues.


Job Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate the noise impact assessments of large and small scale facility applications and complaints
  • Independently recognize the deficiencies in facility applications and prepare correspondence in accordance with the company requirements to improve the company’s understanding of the application
  • Provide support and assistance to other staff and the Commission in addressing the analysis of fundamental scientific concepts and principles for noise aspects of facility applications within tight deadlines
  • Complete the review, analysis and writing of decision reports, approvals and permits and licences within tight deadlines
  • Participate in the development of rules, processes and procedures with respect to noise matters within the company’s jurisdiction
  • Provide information regarding the company’s applications and hearing processes
  • With minimum supervision, liaise with industry, the public, government agencies and independent industry participants
  • Participate in operational plan activities

Candidate Qualification

  • A bachelor of science degree in a related science, engineering or environmental studies, or technical training in a directly related field involving acoustic and vibration analysis
  • Between two and six years of experience with a bachelor of science degree or four to 10 years of experience with technical training only
  • Experience with noise assessments and the analysis of wind turbines will be considered an asset
  • Regulatory or utility experience will be considered an asset
  • Understanding of fundamentals of acoustics and vibration, engineering acoustics, noise control, digital signal processing, electro acoustics, and the associated human responses to acoustics and vibration
  • Knowledge of the administration and practices for noise in accordance with the federal and provincial standards and the implications on facilities where multiple regulators have jurisdiction
  • Ability to develop and use a variety of analytical approaches to synthesize information, identify patterns, solve issues and make recommendations
  • Technical writing ability that conveys intended messages to target audiences with clarity and precision
  • Strong  communication skills (both verbal and written) and a demonstrated ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams and work groups across the organization
  • Demonstrates skill in planning work activities required to ensure quality deliverables
  • Responds to change with flexibility and resilience
  • Seeks out experiences and opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge
