The Lung Association - Alberta & NWT (TLA) is a public , non-profit charity and receives no ongoing funding from the Government, relying on the generosity of private citizens and corporations. The Lung Association - Alberta & NWT funds vital respiratory research and delivers health programs for individuals suffering the lung disease. In addition to supporting research and programming, the (TLA) funds leading edge education for respiratory professionals and helps keep Albertans alert to lung health and how to maintain it. Our major areas of focus are: asthma, tobacco cessation and education, Chronic Obstructive Plumonary Disease (COPD) and sleep apnea. The Lung Association - Alberta & NWT's work is important - today, more than ever because....... - Lung disease, already the third leading cause of death in this country, is the only one of the top three killers in Canada that is on the rise. -Already, one in five albertans sufffer from lung disease. - Asthma is the number one reason children are hospitalized in this province. - Sleep Apneas, now almost as common as asthma, has been implicated in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and contributes to the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems and Stroke.
